If you live in the Southeastern United States....
....do us all a favor and turn OFF your CHRISTMAS LIGHTS!
Here is my reasoning for the request.
1. Christmas Lights create unneeded light pollution.
2. We are in a drought predicted to cause us to run out of drinking water in February.
3. Christmas Lights use enormous amounts of electricity.
4. Electricity in the Southeastern US comes primarily from HYDROELECTRIC POWER. When more power is needed in the region, more water is released from the dams to help create it.
5. If everyone runs their Christmas Lights we will drain the lakes that much quicker because TVA and the Army Corp of Engineers must release that much more water to power the lights.
CONCLUSION:
Your need to keep up with the Joneses, or to impress your friends DOES NOT outweigh my need for potable water or electric power.
The wife and I are already using as little power as possible, will not be putting up Christmas lights outside and only running our Xmas tree when we have a party or family comes over, and are doing everything in our power to conserve water and electricity in all other ways. The little bit of rain we had the last few days is not enough to fix the problem, we are still headed in the same direction we were before.

I'm already ahead of you. I'm not even decorating this year.
