Lawrence Watt-Evans (whom I have never read) came up with a unique way to publish a book when his editor told him they wouldn't be taking anymore in his fantasy series. Undogged, he managed to get it published anyway (the mass market version will be available in late September). Black Gate has an article describing how he got The Spriggan Mirror published as well as a review by Rich Horton. You can also read the story in his own words at the author's website. It's a neat story and I applaud Watt-Evans on his determination to write for his fans, not matter what the publisher said.
