Harry Potter's Myth is just that

OK, I'll admit I've read the first book of Harry Potter. I watched the first movie on DVD. And I follow the news about it (since there is so much of it). But this article from the New York Times hits the mythos of Harry Potter right where it hurts.

It's not the use of real witch spells for Harry's casting, or the rather bland and dull writing of the novels, but that fact that everyone seems to think that these books will some how induce children to read that I always disliked about the series.

As a former schoolteacher, I'm here to tell you that ain't the case. I've thought that from the beginning. Most of the kids who moved on to other books were already big readers, or had natural inclinations to read for pleasure. All the other kids read J.K. Rowling and not much else. And now even the NYT agrees with me.
