Moms for Modesty

My wife ran across a blog called Everyday Mommy. The author found that marketing and PR firms review "mommy blogs" for trends and opinions. So she started the Moms for Modesty Blog Team in an attempt to effect change by encouraging retailers to "provide girls' and young womens clothing that is modest, affordable and stylish."

I'm not a mom, nor is the wife. But if you will link through two blogs to a third, go to her site. Otherwise, go here.

* As a Mom for Modesty I believe in common-sense modesty for girls and young women.
* I believe in refraining from sexualizing our girls and young women.
* I believe that it is unwise and unfair to taunt boys and young men by permitting my daughter(s) to dress in an immodest manner.
* I believe that true beauty comes from within and I strive to teach my daughter(s) this truth.
* I will loyally shop at retailers that provide girls' and young womens clothing that is modest, affordable and stylish.

My own opinion is that I don't need to watch girls develop into women [by that I mean watch their flesh become more like a woman's, I see enough skin (i.e. the wife's) at home thank you very much]. I have enough trouble keeping my eyes off of ads and women I meet at church. I don't need pre-teens and teens wearing inapropriate slogans, cuts, or as little clothing as possible to help me break my covenant with my eyes.

I guess the only part that concerns me is this vow to "loyally shop" wherever modest clothes are sold. I guess I am wondering to whom they are being loyal...the retailers? The Moms for Modesty group? Maybe Jesus?

Maybe I would be more happy if the wording were a bit clearer on that last point. "Loyally shop" implies a sort of unquestioning acceptance of the retailers' wares (once they have been deemed acceptable...by whom?). Anyway, just a thought.

I think she just means she will use her purchasing power to support retailers who provide modest clothing for young women, while boycotting those who don't Perhaps Funke is reading into those words a sentiment that is not present?

I have noticed the deplorable state of young women's clothing today, all the way down to preschool age. It breaks my heart that little girls and preeteens are dressing in a sexualized way. I think what this mom is doing is awesome.

Please send me a list of stores or any place that you know of that sells modest clothing for pre teens and teens.

Also if you have any suggestions on how to suggest more modest clothing to nieces, that would be most wonderful
Sincerely
